Sleeping Newborn

For infants under 12 months of age, follow these practices to reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and prevent suffocation:
  • Place baby on his/her back in a crib or cradle with a firm, perfect fitting cradle mattress.
  • Do not put pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, pillow-like bumper pads or pillow-like stuffed toys in the crib/cradle.
  • Consider using a sleeping sack instead of a blanket.
  • If you do use a blanket, place baby with feet to foot of the crib or cradle. Tuck a thin blanket around the crib/cradle mattress, covering baby only as high as his/her chest
  • Use only a fitted bottom sheet specifically made for crib/cradle use.

Handcrafted Baby Cradle

When it comes to determining the quality of baby furniture, the most important feature is safety. Since a newborn baby spends large amounts of time sleeping it is especially important to select just the right crib or cradle for your newborn baby. A cradle needs to be designed in a way that your little one will not be injured or harmed in any manner. Therefore it is recommended that you choose a cradle that has been handcrafted in order to ensure a 100% non-toxic green environment for your nursery.

A vital element of safety that is many times overlooked is the material in which the cradle is made of. It not only should have a nice appearance and withstand all kinds of stress, but more importantly it should be free of any toxic materials. It is very difficult to find a baby cradle on the US market today that is free of toxic substances. Most importantly, it is critical to avoid any furniture that contains particle boards or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) due to the fact that they contain formaldehyde. The smell alone that comes from such material can make adults dizzy and therefore could be very harmful to a newborn baby. A baby cradle crafted of solid wood and finished with a natural bee wax or crop oil, such as our Alexia Heirloom Cradle, provides a 100% non-toxic green product, as well as a warm and comfortable appearance. Avoiding critical materials and using only biological products it the best way to give your baby a healthy start into life.
